OK, I guess it’s not technically an “app.” But this little thing has proved more useful than most of the apps with “functionality” that clutter up my phone. Here’s why:
It says “Don’t Panic!”
And every time I turn on my phone, those are the words I see. And I remember not to panic. This is very useful for me, because it turns out that I spend much of my day panicking. Sometimes there is a reason, often there’s not. Panicking is just something I’ve gotten used to and comfortable with. Kind of like ending sentences with prepositions. But I’ve learned that - unlike ending sentences with prepositions (yes, there's a whole book about it) - panicking is not a terrific habit to get into. It can raise cortisol levels, put unnecessary stress on your body and mind and just make life less enjoyable than it could be. So this little app is actually very handy for me. Every time I see it, I panic just a little bit less. Maybe it can help you too?
To accompany my “Don’t Panic” smartphone wallpaper, I ordered a “Don’t Panic” scented soy candle from BookishCandles on Etsy. It arrived yesterday and I tried it out this morning. I don’t think I’m exaggerating at all when I say that this is THE BEST CANDLE IN THE UNIVERSE. OK, yes, that’s primarily because it has the words “Don’t Panic” on the front. But it’s also the scent, which is strong enough to fill up a room without being too sweet or overpowering. It is of course the delicate aroma of Fresh Towel. And there is nothing better to clean the air and calm the mind. Jill, the owner of BookishCandles and maker of the Don’t Panic candle and other literary-themed candles, assures me that no actual towels were harmed in the making of the candles. So that’s good too.
